Causette: a review

A few weeks ago I saw an article on rue89 or bakchich talking about a new women's magazine that didn't have any diet or make-up articles. I had to check this out.

If anyone knows a more accurate translation of capiton than "pad" for this context, I'm accepting all suggestions, but it more or less means it's an intelligent magazine.

It's bimonthly, and the March-April edition was the first Causette.

There's an interesting profile of a Parisian hooker who also happens to be a mother and grandmother, a tongue and cheek review of the Powerplate, a three page bande-desinée without any text, except an exerpt of Horaces, a look at the "Centre d'education" where "bad" children used to be sent to become good little citizens, a funny yet poignant one page plea "Lâchez-moi les seins!", plus a number of other articles.

Here's an exerpt of Lâchez-moi les seins:

Marche? Parle? Mauvaise mère!"

At the end of the magazine is a fake horoscope (but then again, aren't they all fake?). Here's the beginning of mine for the two months:

Here's Gemini:

Y compris moi. On attend. Les quelques minutes réglementaires."

Over all, I'd say it's a good start. The only thing I would criticize is one article about a homeless woman beauty pageant in Belgium. The article screams "Damn, we paid to send a journalist to Belgium but there's no story. We'll have to write one anyway". I think it's a fine line to walk between an interesting and intelligent magazine, and also for women. After all, couldn't L'Express or Nouvels Obs be described as intelligent and for women to read? When you take away all the diet/fashion/make-up filler, a good magazine is often just for people, not only women.

I'll leave you with part of the edito on the first page:
