B and I need to declare our taxes, so I was looking at the FAQ's on the French tax site, when I came across this:
"Je suis dans l’obligation de prendre mes repas à l’extérieur de mon domicile, que puis-je déduire?"
Apparently, if the 10% standard deduction is not enough, what you spend on lunch can be tax deductible.
Only in France is it considered a burden to eat lunch away from home, and thus be considered for a deduction. And you can also declare what you give your kids to buy lunch at school. But, if your job is more than 40 km away and you want to get a tax deduction for all the travel you do in your car, you have to prove why your job is so far away (because we all now it's crazy to drive that far to work; wait, that's 24 miles, which is what my parents drive and tons of Americans have commutes twice as long). But we can see the theme here is that you should live close enough to home to pop in and make lunch, so the 40 km restriction makes sense in that case.
