(There's another post below, so scroll down)
B got a Liveradio for his birthday from his brother and we've been having a lot of fun using it.
The Liveradio is a traditional and wireless radio. You can pick up local radio stations, but also listen to radio through the internet (you need a wifi connection though). The speaker is good, so you can turn up the volume a lot more than on your computer. You can also download podcasts directly to your radio, or plug in a usb key into the back and listen to music like an mp3 player.
It's not perfect (B would probably say it's because his brother worked on the programming, hence the gift) and we get error messages when we try to select internet radio stations sometimes. B uses it as his alarm clock now (it has 'traditional' features as well), but some mornings he can't get it to shut off, and other times it doesn't go off. It's supposed to pick up the time automatically from it's wifi connection, but one time we had to reset it because it was several hours off.
But we can live with all this because thanks to the Liveradio we can listen to Fréquence Caribou, the station 100% Québec.
If you're ever feeling down, just listen to Fréquence Caribou for 10 minutes, and I guarantee you'll be feeling better. They play songs with "Tabernacle!" in the lyrics, and the accents of the DJ's and in the ads are wonderful. You'll hear things like "Nous allons jouer un peu de musique pour votre lunch maintenant". I don't listen to French radio a ton, but I know they play a lot of American hits (within the quotas they're allowed). Not on Fréquence Caribou. For half an hour of listening, there'll be maybe one song in English. How refreshing to listen to French music all the time!
On the website you can sign up to get news. I wonder if you can get their newsletter recorded by someone with a Québecois accent?

sounds good. i love listening to obscure radio thanks to internet. i still use an old shortwave sometimes, can it pick up shortwave too? and is it necessarily wi-fi? or can you plug it direct into a computer?
Shortwave I don't think so, but you can plug it into your internet box if you don't have wifi. I don't think you can plug it into a computer to get an internet connection, just your modem.
