Yesterday night we happened across a really great documentary on Arte about French pastry chefs called "Les rois de la pâtisserie". It was made by some Americans, so sometimes the French chefs speak in English to the camera (with great accents), but it was really well done.
The film-makers follow a French pastry chef, who teaches at a culinary school in Chicago, during his preparation for the intense 3 day Meilleur ouvrier de France competition that is only organized once every 4 years. They also follow some other chefs and interview some of the judges for the competition.
You can currently see it for free on Arte +7, and it might be on Daily Motion or YouTube later. If you love sweets and want to get a look at the world of high end pastries, you'll really want to watch this.
If this video player doesn't work (7 days over), it'll be shown again Friday, 9 Septembre 2011, 10h15. You'll have access to it again during the 7 days after September 9th.

My husband and I saw this documentary (in the US) on Netflix. Titled "Kings of Pastry", it's available for instant viewing.

Acclaimed documentarians D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus venture inside the deliciously cutthroat Meilleur Ouvrier de France, the legendary French pastry competition, to capture this fascinating account of what it takes to be the best pâtissier. Held every four years, the contest separates not only the yolks from the whites but the amateurs from the artisans. Renowned chefs from around the world let their tempers fly as they vie for the crown.
